A snapshot of Gilgamesh

about

The Epic of Gilgamesh is thought to be the earliest known example of literature. Written on clay tablets in cuneiform script in Mesopotamia, it tells the foreboding story of the pursuit of immortality and the consequences of disrespecting the natural environment. There are quotations of the text (one of which is interpreted as ‘abandon wealth’: Martin Worthington, Lecturer in Assyriology at the University of Cambridge) which also draw attention to the use of consonance as a marker of creative intention (i.e. why the Epic is regarded as a work of literature). Musically, this track extends this with one section that seeks an unusual consonance in dissonance with a sustained minor 2nd interval.
